BRACING BETTER THAN TAPING FOR ANKLES

Bracing prevents more ankle injuries than taping, says Monte Hunter, MD, author of a study presented yesterday at the 24th annual meeting of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Researchers asked 300 Wake Forest University football players to select either tape or custom fitted braces as a method of preventing ankle injuries (52 percent selected tape, 48 percent selected braces). Seventy-three percent of all ankle injuries (115 out of 158) occurred in players using tape. In addition, braced players returned to the field two days earlier than players injured while wearing tape. "This study shows that braces are more effective in preventing ankle injuries in these athletes," Dr. Hunter said in the press release. "One factor is that tape loosens during activity and does not maintain enough support to protect the ankle."
